Angels are spiritual beings. They have no flesh and blood as humans do. They are not bound by space and time as human beings are. Although they do not take up space physically, they are confined to a single space at one given moment, unlike God who is present everywhere at all times.
They do however, have the power to take on a visible form. They may at times appear in human form in order to accomplish their goal as commanded by God. Here we think of the stories of Abraham and Sarah (Genesis 18), and Lot and his family in Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19:1-5).
The angel Gabriel appeared to Mary to tell her she would be the mother of the promised Messiah. A heavenly choir of angels, appeared to the shepherds on the night Jesus was born (Luke 2: 8-15). In Matthew we read how the angel appeared at the tomb of Jesus to roll the stone away. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow (Matthew 28:3).
Many times in Scripture angels are described as having wings of two or more (Exodus 25:20, Isaiah 6:2, Ezekiel 1:6, and Revelation 4:8). For this reason they are portrayed as such in pictures, statues etc. and rightly so.
Angels have superior intellect and understanding (Daniel 9:22). They learn about God and receive wisdom from God through the church. Ephesian 3:10 tells us, His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms… The apostle Peter also tells us, It was revealed to them [prophets of old] that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things (1 Peter 1: 12).
It is amazing and awesome that the angels actually learn about God from us humans as we study and teach God’s Word in church and Bible Classes. They have the same yearning to learn about God as we do. Keep this in mind as you yourself study and learn.
Although angels are superior to humans they are not equal to God. Their powers are limited to what God allows. What a comfort it is to know that they are on the side of God’s people, guarding them and protecting them according to His will.
In review, angels are created beings. They are spirits without flesh and blood. They are holy and without sin and they are confirmed in their holiness so that they cannot sin. They are not sexual beings (Matthew 22:30). They serve God by protecting and serving His people. They may at times take on physical form to accomplish their assignment. They can only be present in one place at one time unlike God who is present everywhere. They are eager to learn and know more about God. They sometimes have wings. They cannot die. (Luke 20: 35, 36).
All angels were created holy and without sin. Satan and some of his angels fell into sin at some point after Creation. Satan and his fellow demons along with all humans who reject God are doomed to eternal punishment and separation from God.
This information on angels is taken from the book, “Angels and Demons, Have Wings-Will Travel” by John D. Schuetze (Peoples Bible Teachings).
